The University of New Mexico’s Veterans Offices will process all required paperwork with the VA, with the exception those using Vocational Rehabilitation and Education, VR&E Ch 31. Ch 31 veterans must process their VA Form 28-1900 with the VA and they will send you VA Form 28-1905 to bring in to the Veterans Offices. All others please follow the steps below to make sure you have all the documentation required to obtain your educational goal.

Undergraduate Main Campus Admissions Checklist

  1. Complete and submit an application for admission – Via mail or on-line.

  2. Determine which VA Educational Benefit, if any, you will be using and apply for VA Benefits on-line.

    • When you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA, take it to the Veterans Certifying Office on UNM Main Campus in Mesa Vista Hall, (aka) The One Stop, or the Veteran's Resource Center at the Student Support and Service Center (SSSC) across from the Pit.

  3. If you have attended other institutions, request that your official transcripts be mailed to UNM (see address below).

  4. Request official military transcripts be mailed to UNM and download an unofficial copy for yourself and for forwarding to the Veterans Resource Center.

  5. Request that your high school transcripts be mailed to UNM.

    • Required only if you have less than 26 Transfer Credits.

  6. Provide ACT or SAT scores to UNM or schedule to take a COMPASS placement test. If you have an aggregate of 26 Credits, you will NOT need SAT / ACT scores or high school transcripts.

    • If you have less than an aggregate of 26 Credits then you can request ACT / SAT scores from the links below:

      1. Past ACT Scores can be ordered from ACT.org.

      2. Past SAT scores can be ordered from Collegeboard.com.

    • If no ACT / SAT tests were taken and/or you have been out of High School for more that 5 years schedule a COMPASS Test. Otherwise you must take your ACT / SAT tests.

  7. Applying for Financial Aid may be a two-step process depending on your situation.

    • Apply for Financial Aid online with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web. (Federal School Code: 002663)

    • Applying for Independent Students' Special Circumstances, submit the Independent Students' Special Circumstances form if there was a change in your economic status from previous year, i.e. you are planning on going to school Full-Time or are not working or there is a significant drop in the amount of income to your household.

      1. Please print out the form and submit with corroborative documentation to the Financial Aid Office at UNM Main Campus in Mesa Vista Hall, (aka) The One Stop.

    • In addition to the above options, there are also grants and scholarships available based on need.

  8. Meet with an academic advisor.

    • Call 505-277-2900 for an appointment.

  9. Upon acceptance to UNM, attend Transfer Student Orientation.

  10. Register for your classes.

    • Remember, you can only be certified for courses REQUIRED for your degree.

    • Submit a copy of your class schedule to Veterans Certifying Office on UNM Main Campus in Mesa Vista Hall, (aka) The One Stop, or on South Campus at the Veteran's Resource Center at the Student Support and Service Center (SSSC) across from the Pit.

  11. Congratulations - you are all done! NOW you are a member of the Pack - Go Lobos!

Graduate Main Campus Admissions Checklist

  2. Please visit the following website to determine your programs entrance criteria and deadlines Office of Graduate Studies.

    • You may use your GI Bill in a “non-degree” status for 2 semesters prior to committing to a program.

  3. Determine which VA Educational Benefit, if any, you will be using and apply for VA Benefits on-line.
