Veterans Using VA Education Benefits

All Veterans, separated or retired, may be eligible for in-state tuition while attending UNM in residence in New Mexico and using VA education benefits. This applies regardless of point of separation or state of residence, as long as the Veteran received any discharge other than dishonorable.

Submit: DD214-Automated showing item #24, Character of Service, separation orders, or retirement orders to Admissions.

Dependents of Veterans Who Died on Active Duty

Dependents may qualify for in-state tuition if their sponsor lost their life while on active duty. This provision is not limited to combat-related deaths.

Requirement: Dependents must move to New Mexico within 60 days of the death and provide evidence of the move.

Submit: A copy of the Notification of Death to Admissions.

Active Duty & Dependents Stationed in New Mexico

Active Duty service members and their dependents are billed at in-state tuition rates while stationed in New Mexico.

Dependents may maintain in-state status if they remain continuously enrolled and in good standing, even if the Active Duty sponsor is transferred.

Submit: Active Duty Military Waiver during the admission process.

Active Duty Dependents Whose Sponsor Is Outside New Mexico

Dependents of Active Duty members or National Guard members on Title X orders may be billed at in-state tuition rates even if their sponsor is not stationed in New Mexico. Dependents do not have to be using a federal education benefit.

Submit: Letter of Intent and Non-Resident Military Form to establish New Mexico residency.

Letter of Intent Requirements

For Active Duty dependents whose sponsor resides or is stationed outside New Mexico, the following documentation must be submitted to Admissions no later than the third Friday of the student's first term of enrollment:

• Transfer driver's license to New Mexico.
• Register any vehicle titled in the dependent's name in New Mexico.
• Obtain voter registration in New Mexico.
• Provide Defense Eligibility Enrollment System (DEERS) DD Form 1172.

National Guard Members & Dependents

National Guard members and their dependents may be billed at in-state tuition rates while attending UNM.

This applies to National Guard status, Active Duty Title X, State Call-Up Title 32, and drilling status.
